Fluffy chocolate brioche, delicate fruit tarts (try raspberry!), illy's coffee are the reasons to visit Bittersweet in Lakeview area of Chicago.

They have reasonable light lunch menu with creative sandwiches, homemade soups, salad, and quiche - they all are well made and tasty but not necessarily served right: you occasionally encounter, for example, gaspacho served at room temperature, quiche with soggy crust. They have variety of cake (cheese cake, tiramisu, creme brulee etc.), bread, and sweets - all good, but for one reason or the other I am not inpressed with them. I wish their products had lighter fluffier texture. They often have some cake samples around the entrance.

The bakery shop (to the right) and the cafe (to the left) are bright, clean, and pleasant. On weekends, be prepared to wait in a line and to eat while people in the line staring at you: Pretty nice on weekdays.

OK, I have a few things to complain about this place, yet I keep going back. There is something very likable about this place.

ちょっと日本の喫茶店を思い起こさせるようなケーキ屋さんです。入ると右手と正面にお菓子、アイスクリーム、ケーキのショーケースが並び、左手手前が喫茶コーナーになってます。お薦めはチョコレートブリオッシュかフルーツタルトをイリーのコーヒーで。シカゴでは美味しいブリオッシュになかなかお目にかかれないので食べたくなるとビタースイートに直行します。

ケーキ・お菓子・パンとも数は多いのですが、その他は、そうですねアメリカの典型的なケーキに比べたら小さめだし甘さ控えめだし、悪くないと思います。ランチもサラダ・サンドイッチ・スープ・キッシュなど手作りっぽいものが比較的お手頃な値段でいただけます。味はおいしいのですが、ガスパッチョが常温に近かったり、キッシュのクラストがベトッとしていたり、今一歩でしょうか。週末はかなりいっぱいで行列にならび、座った後は行列の人に眺められながらのお食事となります。と、いろいろ文句はありますが、ちょっとかわいらしいお店だし気軽に入れるのでお薦めです。お試しあれ。
